I have a ton of brushes, but here’s what I use 95% of the time (from top to bottom in the pic):</p> <p>1. Escoda sz 6 round kolinsky 1210 - I use this one first to lay down broad areas of color.</p> <p>2. Isabey sz. 4 round short handle kolinsky 6227Z - if I had to pick just one brush, this would be it (in some weird hellish nightmare where I can only have one brush).</p> <p>3. Raphael kolinsky red sable extra pointed round, sz 2/0, 8408 - I use this guy for small details. I have a bunch of teeny tiny brushes and none of them are exactly right, but this is my current favorite.</p> <p>4. These watercolor cubes are made by Royal Talens. I also use some gouache from tubes, especially when I want super saturated colors. I like Holbein best.</p> <p>*********************************</p> <p>Like I said, I’m still figuring out how to be a good painter myself, but here’s what I do know:</p> <p>- Expensive brushes are worth it. I got these in early 2009, use them constantly, am somewhat sloppy about cleaning them, and I’m maybe starting to think about replacing the #4 this year…but yeah, they’re wonderful.</p> <p>- I start with big stuff, work my way smaller and smaller, and do details last. If I’m doing it right, it looks like blurry garbage until I’m painting the last 10%!</p> <p>- I start with warm/light colors and end with cold/dark. Is that a thing other painters do? The complex rules of the GOP race reminded me of Eschaton (that ridiculous game from Infinite Jest), so I went towards a sports/game analogy.</p> <p>First, a baseball game with a ridiculously complicated scoreboard:</p> <p><img src="http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lyq2ijzPu81qzkdgl.jpg"/></p> <p>And the approved sketch, a board game with four different things going on:</p> <p><img src="http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lyq2k1rkB61qzkdgl.jpg"/></p> <p>Lately I’ve been trying out some looser, more playful styles of drawing. Those pink, floppy hands look absurd, but I still used photo reference I swear!</p> <p><img src="http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lyq2qfxjRO1qzkdgl.jpg"/></p> <p>I did the final in watercolor, gouache, acrylic and colored pencil.
